If I Ever Make It Home

Frothing salmonella on the Adriatic Sea
Someone locked the gate to dreamland and threw away the key
I swallowed my umbrella, curled up in a Persian rug
The rain came down for thirty days so into the earth I dug

I never found any rainbows, …no pots of gold
Stranded in the station all alone
I never reached that destination, I turned to go
But I don’t mind if I ever make it home

I took the midnight train to Venice, sins of the carnival
The gypsies turned on one another to keep their bellies full
I bid farewell Prater, the meadows turned to snow
Woke up in a warm legume with one place left to go

I blew out the candle and forced myself to sleep
Others shared the bed I made, daisies lined the street
The cake defacing vandal, to the gondolier he spoke
I wonder if the birthday girl would ever get the joke
